It’s the final countdown! The last month of 2020…I often say about the way most of us have spent this year, I have never felt time fly by so fast while doing so little! In some respects that’s true. We may have been under quarantine or other restrictions that prevented us from physically moving about and doing as much as usual but in other ways we have never been so busy experiencing changes and challenges that have brought forth such tremendous shifts and growth that perhaps we could say we have never been so occupied! As we enter into the holiday season and wind down 2020, let’s take a look at the cards for some insight into the energies that December is bringing forward.
Overarching Energy
Traditional Tarot Card: The Hanged Man
“I now take a step back and observe my situation in a new light.”
There could not be a more perfect card to capture the overarching energy not only of the month of December but the whole of 2020. This particular depiction of the Hanged Man has helped to facilitate such a shift in perspective for me personally and has also come up for a number of people I have done readings for as well (more on that below). So many of us have been having a ‘hanged man moment’ this year – a collective pause that perhaps has had us hung up at home, “stuck” working or learning from home and in so many other ways feeling as though we have literally been flipped upside down and immobilized. But this month the Hanged Man as the Observe card is asking us to fully embody the energies of surrender, patience, reflection and perspective.
The Many Perspectives of the Observe Card
The Observe card asks us to consider that there are many aspects to our ‘Self‘. We are here in this now moment with our Present Self where we can only see what is just in front of us. Our Present Self may worry about things that we are unable to control, outcomes that we are unable to predict and so many more things that are unseen. But we have an opportunity to recognize those other parts of our Self that have their own unique perspective and knowingness. The image on the Observe card below so beautifully depicts the many aspects of the woman in the center – each of the seasons of her life and the various perspectives that she had, has or will have. Imagine yourself like the woman in the center and then look at each of these perspectives. Recall something that your Past Self worried about. With what you know now about how that situation played out, what might you tell them? Know that there is also a part of you – your Future Self who already knows the outcome, already knows that all is well and all will be well. In the future, when you look back at your Present Self, how would you like to have experienced this now moment? This is not to say that these moments of uncertainty cannot bring some very real fear and anxiety – of course your Ego Self knows this well. Our ego carries our inner child wounds and insecurities along with processing the various emotions that come along with them. It is the ego that tells us that we are not enough, that we do not have what it takes or that we are separate from others who are out to get us. Our Higher Self knows that this is an illusion – that the people, places and things that precipitate such fear and anxiety are actually there to help challenge and stretch us in ways that will bring about the soul growth and learning that we have come here for. Our Higher Self holds great love and compassion for each aspect of our Self without judgement or fear. Invite each of these aspects of your Self to integrate and work in concert to help you move though each now moment with grace and ease.
Beginning of the Month
Traditional Tarot Card: The Devil
“I now release all fears and open fully to a loving relationship with myself and others.”
With the wisdom and experience of the past 11 months under our belts, the beginning of December presents us with a choice – will we keep our selves restricted by fear and doubt or will we open our hearts to love and joy? Recognize your fears as the deceptions that they are and discover that you hold the key to releasing yourself from their hold over you. It may be tempting but be careful not to overindulge in addictive behaviors or numbing out in order to avoid facing your own shadows. If there is anything that you have been spending your time and energy on that leaves you feeling unfulfilled or fearful, shift your attention away from these things by focusing on how you can be of service to others in whatever capacity that you can. During this season of giving, allow the sense of peace and love that comes from giving to others, to fill your Spirit with light and hope.
Middle of the Month
Traditional Tarot Card: The World
“I acknowledge my many blessings, and am open to receiving my heart’s desires.”
With your heart open and free to give and receive love in all its many forms, you are in a position to see anything that comes your way as a gift. No matter how it is wrapped, embrace it with a grateful heart. It may be cliche but there truly is always, always something to be grateful for – if you are struggling this month due to circumstances of loss, challenges or other disappointments, look for the Grace that surrounds you. Grace can show itself in both large and small ways – there are large things such as family, health and home that you may be so fortunate to cherish. But there are also the small graces – an unseasonably warm day, a courteous driver who lets you out in front of them, witnessing the joy and wonder of the season through a child’s eyes. When you align with the energies of gratitude and contentment you welcome in more of the same so spread your Joy to the World!
End of the Month
Traditional Tarot Card: 8 of Cups
As you pack your bags for the journey into 2021, what will you take with you? What will you leave behind?
As we end the month of December, we are moving onward and upward to 2021! We are moving positively forward – I feel that so strongly. Yes, we are leaving behind those old spilled cups, those disappointments of how things may have gone in 2020 that weren’t what we planned or envisioned, and yet we still greet 2021 with the same hope and enthusiasm that we had in December of 2019 as we set our goals and resolutions for the year ahead. When I looked at this card I heard “fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” Maybe we never got to take that trip, have that dream wedding or had to otherwise adjust our expectations in a thousand disappointing ways. But I really feel Spirit is saying not to give up hope – do not allow the experiences of 2020 to leave you jaded and afraid to dream of a brighter tomorrow! As we move through this month with The Devil and World cards encouraging us to FACE and EMBRACE our shadows and our graces, the 8 of cups says to examine where we are and decide what we will walk away from and what we will carry forward with us into the new year.
Wishing you warmth and love this holiday season!
